The Mexican resort city of Cancun was sleepy countryside before a building boom in the 1970s. Things got interesting when the Mexican government made the decision to create a resort that would appeal to international tourists. The plan was to create the resort and then offer great travel deals to potential visitors.
Now, less than 40 years later there are well over 100 hotels along a several-mile stretch called the Hotel Zone. You would never recognize the place now, with a major downtown area, modern shopping districts and high-end restaurants. In the slow economy, many of the hotels are offering Cancun travel deals and you can find lodging at most any budget range.
I will point out that the whole region can become very hot and humid in the summer months. Next time I go, I’ll look hard at planning the trip for the months between late Fall and Spring.
If you know of somebody who is getting married or graduating, you might consider giving them one or more travel gift vouchers that can be redeemed to cover part of the costs for a vacation. You can give a voucher, or gift card, that will pay for rental car, various airlines and hotel chains and, if you give a voucher for Travelocity, they have even more flexibility in how they use the card.
We’ve observed that travel gift vouchers are less common in the U.S. than in European countries. They are not for everybody, but they can be a unique gift option in some cases.
